Jonnu Smith is having a record-breaking season as a tight end for the Miami Dolphins. On Sunday, against the San Francisco 49ers, Smith set two franchise records in a single drive. With a 22-yard reception in the third quarter, Smith surpassed the previous record for most receptions by a tight end in a single season.
The record-breaking reception was Smith’s 74th of the year, eclipsing the mark set by Randy McMichael in 2004 and tied by Mike Gesicki in 2021. Two plays later, Smith caught his 75th pass, gaining nine yards and moving him to 797 yards on the year. This surpassed McMichael’s record of 791 yards, also set in 2004.
Smith’s impressive performance has put him in contention for another franchise record. He entered Week 16 with five touchdown grabs, just two behind Keith Jackson’s record of seven, set in 1994. With two games remaining in the season, Smith has a good chance of breaking this record as well.
It’s worth noting that the Dolphins’ early seasons in the American Football League saw some prolific numbers from players listed at the “left end” position. Jack Clancy racked up 868 yards from this spot in 1967, and Karl Noonan had 11 touchdowns at this spot in 1968. However, Smith’s achievements are still impressive and a testament to his skill and hard work.
Smith’s record-breaking season is a highlight of the Dolphins’ year, and his performances will be crucial in the team’s remaining games. With his talent and dedication, Smith is likely to continue breaking records and making a significant impact on the field.
