Jurgen Klopp is waiting for word on the severity of Mohamed Salah’s hamstring injury, which forced the Liverpool star to miss Egypt’s Africa Cup of Nations match on Thursday.
The attacker will have an ultrasound and MRI scan to determine the extent of his injuries after leaving the pitch during Egypt’s 2-2 draw with Ghana in the Ivory Coast.
Salah appeared to be in tears as he exited the pitch, but he was subsequently spotted smiling as he left the stadium.
However, Klopp expressed his’shock’ at the ‘intense’ moment Salah grasped the back of his left leg after a run and lay on his back to undergo treatment.
Klopp said ahead of Sunday’s visit to Bournemouth: ‘We don’t know anything; we spoke last night and there was an assessment; they are conducting it now, and we will know more.
‘Of course, it was shocking at the time, and I couldn’t understand why he had been hit by anything so powerful.
“Going down, you have these kind of hamstring injuries and he felt it, and we know how rarely Mo goes off, or needs to go off, so it is definitely something and we will see, but I don’t have any more information right now.”
When asked if Liverpool would have to send over their own medical personnel, Klopp answered, “It will depend on the diagnosis.”
‘There will be an ultrasound and an MRI to determine what it is, and then we shall see.’
Liverpool were already bracing for Salah’s absence until their February 17 match against Brentford, if Egypt were to reach the AFCON final in Abidjan.
However, the worry is that he will be out for a much longer period of time healing from his injury.
The Reds are already lacking a large number of players. Joel Matip, Stefan Bajcetic, Thiago Alcantara, Kostas Tsimikas, Andrew Robertson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ben Doak, and Dominik Szoboszlai are all injured. Wataru Endo represents Japan at the Asian Cup.
Egypt needed Salah’s stoppage-time penalty to salvage a point in their first AFCON group game against Mozambique.
Liverpool’s Premier League campaign resumes on Sunday against Bournemouth, followed by the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final against Fulham.
Egypt coach Rui Vitoria stated there was no definite information on the degree of Salah’s injury after the game, with the winger scheduled for additional evaluation.
He stated, ‘We don’t know what the problem is yet. I hope it’s not a major issue.
‘The timing was tough for us because we could only make two replacements in the second half. I don’t think it’s harmful, but we’ll see.
Egypt is second in Group A after drawing their first game, ahead of their last match against group leaders Cape Verde, who face Mozambique on Friday.
