Callum Wilson of Newcastle United has declined to comment on his future on Tyneside, despite transfer interest from rivals Chelsea and Manchester United, as well as clubs on the continent such as AC Milan and Atletico Madrid.
Following a period of transfer windows in which the North East club focused on incomings, whispers of sells have gripped Newcastle United this month. Bayern Munich has expressed interest in full-back Kieran Trippier, and Miguel Almiron has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia as the club seeks to increase revenue.
According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester United are all ‘alert’ about a potential £18 million signing for proven Premier League goalscorer Wilson.
All three of the teams are reported to be looking for a striker, and that sum could be considerably more realistic than spending over £100 million on Ivan Toney or Victor Osimhen.
Newcastle United is attempting to collect finances to comply with Premier League profit and sustainability standards, having spent over £400 million since being acquired by the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund in 2021. Wilson, who is seven years older than his teammate, is now second-choice in front of Swedish international Alexander Isak.
The England international, who has seven Premier League goals this season despite an injury-plagued season, would be a significant coup for the Blues, Gunners, and Red Devils given his proven Premier League proficiency. The player scored 18 league goals for Newcastle United last season and has scored at least eight per season since 2017/18.
Wilson was quizzed about his future at St James’ Park on the most recent episode of the Footballer’s Football Podcast on BBC Sounds, but refused to tell host Rickie Haywood-Williams what was going on behind the scenes. Haywood-Williams inquired: “As for transfer speculation, Cal, there are rumours about you. Can you put any light on the rumours surrounding AC Milan, Atletico Madrid, and a loan bid that Newcastle rejected?
Wilson declined to rule out a move and commit to Newcastle United, instead responding simply with ‘no’. He said, “There’s always speculation around players, not just regarding myself, but everyone else in the squad I’m sure. I’ve not much more to say than that.”
