Following his sacking as Roma manager, footage of an upset Jose Mourinho emerged.
On Tuesday, Roma fired Mourinho, ending his two-and-a-half-year tenure as manager.
The Portuguese coach led the Italian club to the UEFA Europa Conference League title in 2022, but this season, his team has struggled in Serie A.
The final straw for club managers was a 3-1 loss to AC Milan on Sunday, only days after Roma was knocked out of the Coppa Italia by archrivals Lazio.
Former Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi has been named Mourinho’s successor, with a deal till the end of the season.
The Capital club presently finds itself ninth in the table, having won only eight of their twenty league
Despite his on-field troubles this season, Mourinho remains popular among Roma fans. On Tuesday morning, a large crowd gathered at Roma’s training facility to bid goodbye to their outgoing coach.
The emotion appears to be mutual, as video of a tearful Mourinho saying goodbye to the club’s fans has surfaced on X.
Mourinho’s contract was set to expire at the end of the current season, but Roma executives felt it would be wiser to get rid of him immediately.
Roma co-owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin stated, “We will always have fond memories of his time at Roma, but we believe that an immediate change is in the best interests of the club.” We wish Jose and his assistants the best of luck in their future endeavours.
Mourinho will receive about £3 million in compensation from the club following his sixth sacking, bringing his total career earnings from pay-offs to more than £85 million.
There is conjecture that Mourinho’s next job may be at Newcastle, where manager Eddie Howe is under pressure following an unimpressive season thus far.
José’s sack by Roma had him in tears.
