Jose Mourinho’s career in England is ended, despite the fact that the three-time Premier League winner is once again available for employment, according to Simon Jordan. The 60-year-old was fired from his fourth position in a row on Tuesday when Roma parted ways after two and a half seasons.
For the former Chelsea player, it raises new concerns about his next steps in football, following cup success but league troubles. As Mauricio Pochettino comes under fire at Stamford Bridge, many have speculated about a possible third spell in charge, but the prevailing perception is that the Special One’s talents may have waned.
Mourinho has now failed to win a league title since 2015, six months before being fired by Chelsea, which left the club just above the relegation zone. Although his efforts to lead Manchester United to second place in his first year were the closest they had been since Sir Alex Ferguson left in 2013, Mourinho’s path to success still leaves clubs empty-handed at the end.
United, for example, have only deteriorated in his wake – though this is not solely down to Mourinho – and Spurs have also struggled since his dismissal. Roma has enjoyed excellent success on the pitch, but they also have financial issues with the third highest payroll bill in the country.
Mourinho’s drive to be at the core of things remains strong, making him more likely to demand a large stage regardless of his future job. Jordan, on the other hand, does not see him returning to England for a fifth time. “Mourinho guided them [Roma] to a cup final, where they lost. Jose is at the centre of the debate. “I still believe he is one of the best managers of his time,” the former Crystal Palace owner told talkSPORT.
“It’s difficult to deny that Mourinho’s trajectory is upward. I don’t argue that he can get an outstanding position. Jose Mourinho has many positive qualities that I admire. I don’t enjoy approaching a referee in a parking lot, but I do admire a lot of his achievements. I think there is still a space for him in football.”
Given his recent record, many others throughout the world have taken a similar view, though the showcase for him remains in Newcastle, the United States, England, Saudi Arabia, or a Saudi Pro League team. According to reports from the Middle East, he has already decided to take over al Shabab.
It comes months after Mourinho claimed to have turned down the league’s absurd offer, “the biggest and scariest offer a coach has ever received” in his own words. “I will go to Saudi Arabia in some free time, but I am convinced that I will work there,” he went on to say. “I do not know when, but I am very certain. Nobody knows the future, but I will undoubtedly do this [working in Saudi Arabia].
That time has arrived earlier than expected, especially given his desire to extend his contract at Roma for what would have been an extraordinary fourth season in a job. Jamie Carragher has known for some time that he will be unable to compete at the highest level again.
“I don’t see Mourinho back in the Premier League; I believe that ship has sailed now,” he remarked after leaving Tottenham two days before the 2021 Carabao Cup final. “I struggle to think of any club – he’s been at Spurs, so he’s not going to Arsenal, he’s been at United so he’s not going to City, Liverpool wouldn’t have him.”
Carragher continued, “I couldn’t see light at the end of the tunnel for Spurs.” My argument was that winning the Carabao Cup for Spurs fans would be enough to keep Jose in his job in the long run.
“I always thought, keep him until the cup final, he’s great in one-off games, maybe not as much now, but I think Spurs have got less chance of winning now, and Pep Guardiola will be pleased when he sees that.”Unless the players have spoken to Daniel Levy and the mood inside the club is so poor that they believe they have a better chance of winning at the weekend. Alternatively, Daniel Levy believed that winning the cup would make it more difficult to move him on.
“Would he go to a mid-table club? I honestly don’t see him there. It’s either international football or perhaps Italy. The Italian winners this year will be Inter Milan, led by Antonio Conte, who plays his style of football – so maybe you can get away with it a little more in Italy, but it was obviously a turn-off for Spurs fans.”
Mourinho’s football eventually became a concern for Dan and Ryan Freidkin. Along with dismal results, he failed to establish a team of undeniable quality. That, after all, has been his standard operating procedure for many years.
Speaking about a previous chat with Mourinho, Carragher claimed he told him, “Don’t you f***ing start about diving, your Porto side was the f***ing worst!” when they first met. “You know I was just fighting for my team, don’t you?” Mourinho is alleged to have responded.
That is Mourinho in a nutshell. Whether that attitude returns to England remains to be seen.
