Jurgen Klopp’s next position is likely to be his last after leaving Liverpool in the summer. On Friday, the German manager startled the football world by announcing that this season will be his last at Anfield, despite his team presently leading the Premier League and having a possibility of winning three different cup events.
Klopp has so far denied that he has another post lined up elsewhere, instead citing the need for a break from football after eight and a half years on Merseyside. He has also refused to take another post in England, believing he would be unable to lead a team against Liverpool.
However, the 56-year-old has already provided a strong indication of how long he will be in management If he is appointed elsewhere. The former Borussia Dortmund manager announced his retirement date in September 2016, exactly a year after taking over for Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool.
He predicted that he will complete his career in Germany, telling RedaktionsNetwerk: “I certainly will (return) to live, but I’m not sure if I’ll be back as a coach yet.” The day will come when I can say, ‘thanks, it was a pleasure’.
Klopp has already secured his legendary position at Liverpool, having led the team to the 2018/19 Champions League and their first Premier League triumph in thirty years. During his tenure, the club also won the League Cup, FA Cup, European Super Cup, and World Club Cup.
He received a standing ovation from supporters during Sunday’s home FA Cup match against Norwich. However, he has emphasised that there is no chance he will reverse his choice before the end of the campaign, whatever of The desire of supporters.
“It’s extremely doubtful that I’ll still be sitting on the bench when I’m 60. And, if I only had the opportunity to coach Mainz, Dortmund, and Liverpool at the end of my career, they would all be excellent clubs.”
Tellingly, Klopp will leave the Reds just a few weeks before his 57th birthday. That would leave him with only three seasons in the game, and given his intention to take a break, his next move is unlikely to last more than two years.
Following his shock decision, he has been connected with the German national team, with Julian Nagelsmann scheduled to step down after Euro 2024. Bayern Munich has also been mentioned as a possible destination amid mounting pressure on Thomas Tuchel.
