Former Liverpool player John Barnes says Jurgen Klopp’s recruitment method is reminiscent of Sir Alex Ferguson’s. During the summer transfer window, the German manager revamped his entire midfield, and his new arrivals have had an immediate impact at Anfield.
The Reds have had a fantastic start to the season and have rapidly established themselves as serious title contenders. Despite showing strong indications of improvement, they have won 13 of their first 20 Premier League games and now sit atop the standings.
The influx of new faces in the locker room has propelled Liverpool to new heights, with past stalwarts seamlessly replaced. Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, James Milner, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were all permitted to depart the Reds this summer, and they were replaced by Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, and Wataru Endo.
Since joining the Merseyside club, the quartet has all impressed, with Klopp garnering plaudits from Barnes for the way he oversaw the renovation. The former England international believes Klopp’s success in the market has made Chelsea feel slightly ashamed. The Blues have spent well over £200 million on new midfielders in recent transfer windows, but they have underperformed this season, finishing in 10th position. Barnes told instantcasino.com, “I think you have to give credit to Jurgen Klopp.”
“He recognised there was a problem in the midfield and brought in some really good players in Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister, as well as reintroducing Curtis Jones.”
“He’s identified a weakness in his team and taken action to address it.” Sir Alex Ferguson was great at transitioning his team, pulling out three or four players and replacing them properly, and I believe Klopp is doing the same.
“I think Mac Allister is a fantastic buy at £35 million, especially when you consider Chelsea spent £100 million on both Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo – there’s probably not much difference between those three as players.” They’ve done a great job with the players they’ve brought in, and Klopp has been at the forefront of it.”
Caicedo is one of many players who have struggled since moving to Stamford Bridge in the last 18 months, with doubts being raised as to why the Ecuador international has not demonstrated the talent that earned him a £115 million contract with Brighton.
Mac Allister, on the other hand, has given Liverpool’s midfield an injection of creativity in deeper areas while also providing Klopp with plenty of alternatives considering that the Argentina international can be used in a more defensive-minded role as part of a midfield three.
