Mohamed Salah will not travel to the Ivory Coast for the Africa Cup of Nations after Egypt was shockingly eliminated on penalties by DR Congo on Sunday night.
Salah has returned to Merseyside to receive treatment after suffering a hamstring injury in his country’s group stage match against Ghana on January 18, as agreed upon by the Egyptian FA. He was scheduled to rehabilitate at the AXA Training Centre before flying back out for the final stages of AFCON, assuming his squad advanced that far.
However, the 31-year-old will now stay in-house to heal before his final games under Jurgen Klopp. Salah is expected to be absent for up to three weeks due to his setback, This means he will miss the Premier League games against Chelsea and Arsenal in the coming seven days.
Last week, Egypt national team doctor Mohamed Abouela was cautious to give a specific timeline for Salah’s return after X-rays revealed that the damage was more than initially assumed. He stated, “When will Salah return from injury with his treatment at Liverpool?
“I can’t say that since muscle injury is determined by how much you improve each day. But I can tell that we worked with Salah for four days properly, and the player developed in them as good as possible.”
Salah has had a great injury record with Liverpool, missing only a handful of games due to injuries during his nearly seven-year tenure. He remains the club’s leading scorer this season, with 18 goals in 27 games.
