Manchester United has included a buy-back clause in Sevilla’s contract with Hannibal Mejbri.
Mejbri, 20, has agreed to join Sevilla on loan for the rest of the season, with the option of signing him permanently for £17 million.
If Sevilla chooses that option, a buy-back clause will be added to Mejbri’s contract.
According to sources, the transaction is tricky, but United sees Mejbri’s valuation and the buy-back clause as advantages. Contrary to popular belief, the Ineos Group did not interfere to change the terms of the transaction.
Mejbri was left out of Manchester United’s matchday squad for their 2-2 draw with Tottenham.
Mejbri joined United from the Monaco academy in 2019 and spent last season on loan at Birmingham City in the Championship.
Mejbri has not played for United since being substituted at halftime in a loss to Galatasaray in early October. This season, he has made ten appearances.
The Tunisian international chose not to compete in the Africa Cup of Nations in order to concentrate on his club career, despite the possibility of a transfer this month.
Sevilla, the Europa League holders, are having a miserable season and are only three points above the relegation zone in La Liga.
United previously had buy-back clauses in the contracts of Memphis Depay, Adnan Januzaj, Sean Goss, and Zidane Iqbal, and all three declined to re-sign.
