Former Pro Bowl linebacker Shaq Barrett has applied for reinstatement to play in the NFL immediately, according to his agents Drew Rosenhaus and Robert Bailey. Barrett had announced his retirement from the league in July, but it seems he’s had a change of heart.
Barrett’s decision to come out of retirement is a surprising one, especially given his age and the physical demands of the linebacker position. However, he’s proven himself to be a talented and durable player throughout his career, with 354 tackles, 41.5 sacks, and 10 forced fumbles in 110 games played.
The Dolphins currently hold Barrett’s contractual rights, which means they’ll have to decide whether to reinstate him or release him to sign with another team. Given Barrett’s talent and experience, it’s likely that several teams will be interested in signing him if he’s released.
Barrett’s best season came in 2019, when he racked up 19.5 sacks and 6 forced fumbles en route to a Pro Bowl selection. He’s also played for the Broncos and Buccaneers during his 8-year career.
It’s worth noting that Barrett’s reinstatement is not a guarantee, as he’ll need to meet certain conditions set by the NFL before he’s allowed to play again. However, given his experience and talent, it’s likely that he’ll be able to meet those conditions and get back on the field soon.
The Dolphins could certainly use a player of Barrett’s caliber, as they’re currently ranked 25th in the league in total defense. If they decide to reinstate him, he could be a valuable addition to their defense.
Only time will tell if Barrett will be able to make a successful return to the NFL, but one thing is certain – he’s got the talent and experience to make an impact if he’s able to get back on the field.
