Tua Tagovailoa’s impressive performance this season has been a major factor in the Miami Dolphins’ recent resurgence. The team’s ups and downs have coincided with his availability, and his elevated play has been a key contributor to their success. Despite the odds being against them, Tagovailoa is on pace to break an impressive NFL record held by Drew Brees.
Drew Brees is widely regarded as one of the most accurate passers in NFL history. His 67.7% career completion percentage is the highest of any quarterback who has played six or more years in the league. Brees also holds the record for the best single-season completion percentage, with a mark of 74.4% set in 2018.
Tagovailoa is currently on pace to surpass Brees’ record, albeit barely. Through 13 weeks of the 2024 NFL season, Tagovailoa has completed 207 of his 278 pass attempts, good for a completion percentage of 74.5%. This puts him just ahead of Brees’ record, but it will be an uphill climb for him to maintain this pace over the final five games of the season.
Four of the Dolphins’ final five opponents have pass defenses ranked in the top five in the league in terms of completion percentage. This includes two games against the New York Jets, who are ranked third in the league in this category. The Houston Texans, who lead the league in allowing opposing quarterbacks to complete just 56.3% of their throws, are also on the schedule for Week 15.
Despite the challenges ahead, Tagovailoa will be looking to maintain his impressive form and break Brees’ record. He will need to complete at least three out of every four passes over the final five games of the season to achieve this feat. It will be a difficult task, but if anyone can do it, it’s Tagovailoa.
Tagovailoa is not the only quarterback threatening the top 10 in single-season completion percentage this year. Jared Goff is currently ranked fifth on the list at 71.8%, while Baker Mayfield is in eighth at 71.2%. However, Tagovailoa is the only one with a realistic chance of breaking Brees’ record.
