The Miami Dolphins’ loss to the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night was a tough pill to swallow for fans and ownership alike. As the team’s playoff hopes dwindle, attention turns to the front office and General Manager Chris Grier. Despite his efforts, Grier’s tenure has been marked by mediocrity, and it’s time for owner Stephen Ross to consider making a change.
Since becoming GM in 2016, Grier has led the Dolphins to just two playoff appearances, both of which ended in first-round exits. His overall record stands at 59-76, a far cry from the success Ross envisioned when he hired Grier.
In contrast, the top two GMs in the NFL right now, Brandon Beane of the Buffalo Bills and Brett Veach of the Kansas City Chiefs, have consistently delivered winning seasons and playoff appearances. Beane has led the Bills to three consecutive playoff berths, while Veach has guided the Chiefs to four straight AFC Championship Games.
Grier’s drafting prowess has also come under scrutiny. Since 2016, he has selected just 14 players who have gone on to become starters, a paltry number compared to Beane’s 21 and Veach’s 20.
Furthermore, Grier’s free agency signings have often failed to pan out. The likes of Jordan Phillips, Danny Amendola, and Albert Wilson have all underwhelmed, leaving the Dolphins with a lack of depth and talent.
Ross has been patient with Grier, but it’s time for him to take a hard look at the state of the franchise. With a talented young quarterback in Tua Tagovailoa and a stout defense, the Dolphins have the foundation for success. However, Grier’s inability to surround Tagovailoa with weapons and build a consistent winner has hindered the team’s progress.
Firing Grier would be a tough call, but it’s necessary to revitalize the franchise. Ross needs to bring in a GM with a proven track record of success, someone who can identify talent and build a winning culture.
The Dolphins have been stuck in mediocrity for far too long. It’s time for a change, and that change starts with Grier’s departure.
As the Dolphins look to the future, they must prioritize finding a GM who can deliver results. Anything less is unacceptable.
