Kelly Stafford said her 5-year-old daughter “started crying on the field” because of how some fans treated their family at Ford Field before the Rams-Lions wild-card playoff game on Sunday night.
On Tuesday’s episode of her monthly podcast, the wife of Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford revealed that she and their four girls, ages 3 to 6, were exposed to loud boos from the stands as they attempted to maneuver their way between sidelines on the field before the game.
“I needed to explain to two of my girls. “Hunter began crying on the field,” Kelly Stafford explained. “Listen, this isn’t everyone. These are the fans who are the most vocal. But that’s sports!
“But I will say one thing: we aren’t playing the game. My daughters and I are not playing the game. And I know my girls will not be booed. I am. I can handle it. But with my girls next to me, there’s something to say about maybe not.”

Matthew Stafford spent 12 seasons as the Lions’ quarterback until being traded to the Rams following the 2020 season. While Stafford went on to win the Super Bowl in his first year in Los Angeles, the Lions remained without a playoff victory since 1992.
Stafford, who was widely cheered by fans in Detroit following his departure, received a different reception Sunday as the opposition team’s leader in the Lions’ first playoff game in three decades.
Kelly Stafford stated that she met with Lions owner/chair emeritus Martha Firestone Field on the field before to the game, and that she and the kids attempted to make their way to the Rams side of the field.
Stafford claimed that’s when they were treated rudely by Lions fans.
The day after the Rams’ season-ending loss, Stafford took to Instagram to lash out “the fans who booed my children.” However, Stafford later stated on her podcast that she recognized this wasn’t the case and had explained it to her girls in the moment.
“I saw it as a teaching opportunity for my children. “You know, Hunter is in tears,” she remarked. “I said, ‘Guys, they’re not booing you. They’re not booing you. They’re booing Mommy. They are extremely passionate and enthusiastic about this game. They want the Lions to triumph. We’re from another team. And you know what? We’ll go on because there are supporters in there cheering and saying thank you. But we are not hearing.
